My Path to UX
“A lifelong dedication to the arts and a love for solving difficult problems through empathy, creativity, and analytical thinking.”
I grew up in a smallish city in the Midwest surrounded by a creative family. I was very close with my Grandfather who was a well-known architect and visual artist in the region, designing a wide range of public buildings and private homes over many decades. He also produced everything from exquisite charcoal drawings, watercolors and carvings in wood and wax to large-scale public murals. He did a lot of work out of his home so I was constantly exposed to his work and most importantly, his process. My Mother is a talented artist, producing wonderful drawings and collages as well as jewelry. And my Father was a well-known local musician for many years.
I eventually decided to pursue architecture myself, studying at the University of Missouri in Kansas City and the University of Colorado in Boulder. Even though I excelled, spending two-and-a-half exciting years in the major, I finally decided Visual Art would be the ideal way for me to explore and develop my ideas. I graduated cum laude with a BFA in Visual Art from Colorado State University and have since completed a wide range of creative work in photography, drawing, painting, graphic and web design.
Yet I never lost my desire to solve complex design problems like the kind I was asked to tackle during my architectural studies. A couple of years ago I discovered the field of UX Design and knew it was a great match for my potent combination of curiosity, creativity, empathy, and analytical thinking. Since then I have been a UX Design sponge, earning professional certifications in UX/UI Design and Product Design from Uxcel, participating in UX online forums and Discord groups, and exploring my own creative problem-solving in the case studies presented here. I look forward to many years of learning and challenges in this rewarding career.
